OCR: Leonardo writes: "Where a reflected current meets its own waves in the stream, the water will always be shallow, because in such a spot a sharp-crested heap of sand is created, the slopes of which are affected by the friction of two contrary motions. . . . When the surface of the water consists of small shaded waves which form themselves into lines that meet at an angle, the fact shows that the bed of the river is not deep, and it is also produced by the sand thrown off by the water as it passes through a confined space such as the arch of a bridge or the like."
